Dominic Thorpe was artist in resident for the Wicklow county arts office (2009 - 2010). During this time he met with farm families and spent time on farms and in the landscape of County Wicklow.
To conclude the residency he developed a series of Visual artworks for exhibition at the Mermaid Arts Centre in Drawing, Photography, Video/Audio and sculpture.

Included in this exhibition is a drawing: ‘A Portrait of Elizabeth Frances Bobbett 1899-1971, with the number of farms in the Irish state that have ceased operating so far in my lifetime’
The drawing was made with a single rubber stamp with the number 141,600. According to Central Statistics Office reports Farming Since The Famine and Farm Structure Survey 2007 at least 141,600 farms have closed down so far in my life time.
