Terrain
Public Art work
Naas County Kildare 2008
Terrain was made for Transitopia, a public art project in Naas County Kildare curated by Mark Durkin and Mary-Jo Gilligan that aimed to re-examine and respond to the identity of Naas as a modern commuter town.
I put out a call online through a train-users organisation to see if anyone would be interested in working with me. Naas resident Chris O'Neill emailed me and we began to work together.
I made/performed Chris' daily journey by bike from his home in Naas to Sallins train station, from Sallins to Dublin on the train, from Heuston Station in Dublin to his place of work in the city, and then back again. I filmed the entire return journey and presented it as a video-work in real time, it took approx three hours. The video was over-dubbed with an audio recording of Chris talking about his memories of particular sites and buildings in Naas and feelings about the changing uses of these places and the town in general. The DVD was presented as part of an installation at the Kildare County Council offices in Naas town.
In the installation I used Turf taken from the Bog of Allen in Kildare, Red bricks and a bed.
This is an eight and a half min edit of a 35 min recording.
